One of the most important flight routes and the first to be completed, stretched across the US from New York to San Francisco The giant arrows started to be placed across the country, sometimes. The steel towers were torn down and went to the war effort. New advances in communication and navigation technology made the big arrows obsolete, and the Commerce Department decommissioned the beacons in the 1940s. Radio and radar are, of course, infinitely less cool than a concrete Yellow Brick Road from sea to shining sea, but I think we all know how this story ends. (A generator shed at the tail of each arrow powered the beacon.) Now mail could get from the Atlantic to the Pacific not in a matter of weeks, but in just 30 hours or so. Each arrow would be surmounted by a 51-foot steel tower and lit by a million-candlepower rotating beacon. Every ten miles, pilots would pass a bright yellow concrete arrow. The Postal Service solved the problem with the world’s first ground-based civilian navigation system: a series of lit beacons that would extend from New York to San Francisco. This meant that flying in bad weather was difficult, and night flying was just about impossible. A fifty-one foot tower for the huge light was taken to the bottom of the mountain this morning by truck, and with tractors was hauled as far as the. There were no good aviation charts in those days, so pilots had to eyeball their way across the country using landmarks. Erection of a two million candlepower beacon, the first of the airway beacons in Nevada, started yesterday near Verdi on top of the mountain above Mogul between Reno and Verdi. On August 20, 1920, the United States opened its first coast-to-coast airmail delivery route, just 60 years after the Pony Express closed up shop. What are these giant arrows? Some kind of surveying mark? Landing beacons for flying saucers? Earth’s turn signals? No, it's… ).Quote Every so often, usually in the vast deserts of the American Southwest, a hiker or a backpacker will run across something puzzling: a ginormous concrete arrow, as much as seventy feet in length, just sitting in the middle of scrub-covered nowhere. For example, beacon number 15 would have a code digit of 5 (the units digit), hence the letter R, and Morse code: "dit dah dit" ( To help remember the letters and their sequence number, pilots memorized the following: "When Undertaking Very Hard Routes, Keep Direction By Good Methods." The beacons are depicted on navigation charts along with their number and Morse code pattern. A pause of 1.5 seconds separates each letter. The course lights turn on for 0.5 second for a dot, 1.5 second for a dash with a 0.5 second between each dot or dash. The letters represent the digits of 1 through 10 (W = 1. Red lights denote an airway beacon between landing fields while green denotes a beacon adjacent or upon a landing field. Just below the white beacon, a set of red or green course lights point along each airway route. Montana took steps to modernize their beacons, encasing newer light systems in clear domes. In clear weather they could be seen for 40 miles (64 km). spinning at 6 rpm, creating a quick one-tenth second flash every ten seconds. Light characteristicsĪn airway beacon has two distinct light characteristics: A revolving narrow white light beam about 5 degrees wide in azimuth and a set of fixed colored course lights of about 15 degrees width. Many of these arrows remain today, some of which are visible from satellite pictures, even in urban settings. ![]() A large concrete slab, in the shape of an arrow, was located near the base of each beacon. ![]() After the first initial meeting, Joe and I waited until we were out of view and put our arms around each other and, incredulously, asked if we were really going to do this? There was a sense that we were really going to create something special. “Myself and others in the team are huge fans of Disney and of this character in particular, so it was really important that we got this right. “The real key for me was ensuring that we tell the right story,” said Chapman. The agreement was reached in January 2020 after we did our final pitch, and we’ve been working on it ever since.” We were invited to visit the ride in Disneyland, where Mike and I got to ride it twice in a row, and then in August 2019 Disney visited our studios here in the UK to discuss further. We met the team in LA to discuss our initial plans. “This was all achieved with three meetings with Disney. “At the heart of it, we feel there is a cultural alignment between the values we hold dear at Rare and those of Disney, so it feels like a logical fit. “This all started back at E3 2019 where Mike and I suggested to the team at Disney that we talk about bringing the two worlds together,” said Neate. NME recently got a chance to spend some time chatting with Joe Neate, executive producer on Sea of Thieves, the game’s creative director Mike Chapman and Luigi Priore, the VP of Disney & Pixar Games about the upcoming A Pirate’s Life update.īut how does the team go from the kernel of an idea to bring an iconic character like Jack Sparrow into Sea of Thieves, and how do you go about approaching Disney with the idea? ![]() READ MORE: ‘Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life’ – what’s inside the game’s “biggest and most ambitious update yet?”.Sea of Thieves’ A Pirate’s Life downloadable content (DLC) will bring beloved Disney character, pirate Jack Sparrow into the world of Sea of Thieves in a brand-new, original story adventure. For over three years these stories have revolved around Sea of Thieves’ evolving in-game lore, but now a new kind of story is entering the fray with the recent reveal at the E3 Xbox Bethesda showcase. Veteran British game studio Rare has turned its pirate adventure game into a sandbox of limitless tales. I do not want to spoil it.Įvery single mechanic that the game introduces is absolutely pushed to the brink. The sixth area is much longer than its predecessors and it utilizes a ridiculously interesting trick, but I will not discuss it because that should be a moment for every player to experience on their own. There are six total areas in the game, each consisting of about a dozen puzzles. None of the mechanics are explained to the player, you are meant to play around in the puzzles to discover the nuances organically. Subsequent areas focus on other mechanics: the second area is all about skewering sausages, the third is about rolling on top of them, so on and so forth. The act of simply manipulating the sausages and controlling the character is explored in the first area. The beauty of Stephen’s Sausage Roll is that it capitalizes on every facet of the game’s mechanics. These constraints will take a while for any player to get used to, and are a necessary to facilitate the complexity of the puzzles. You can move forwards or backwards, and you can rotate left and right. ![]() The player also occupies 2 spaces on the grid, which makes the game remarkably difficult to control. You must cook both sides of the sausage, but if you cook the same spot twice, it will burn. The game is played on a grid, and each sausage occupies 2 spaces. The player’s goal is to fully cook sausages on grills without burning them. This game is insanely difficult, and from the outset the game is going to challenge you. It sounds remarkably simple, but Stephen’s Sausage Roll takes sausage rolling to the extreme. You have to plan ahead since you move in tight spaces and everything has to fit snugly. If you’re unfamiliar with Sokoban, it is a subset of puzzle games that revolves around pushing objects to specific locations. Stephen’s Sausage Roll is a Sokoban-style puzzle game. How could a game about rolling sausages be worth $30? The thing is, Stephen’s Sausage Roll is one of the greatest puzzle games ever created, and its unparalleled level design is what sets it apart. The name is goofy, the visuals are ugly, the premise is bizarre, and the price is high. I know what you’re thinking: “ Stephen’s Sausage Roll sounds like a joke.” This is not a joke, far from it. ![]() Because several of the processes are performed online in the cloud, the software doesn’t require as much of your PC’s resources. ![]() ![]() You're then left with an image where the top half the screen is from the previous frame and the bottom half is from the new, freshly available frame. The result is that mid-way through a refresh, the monitor is receiving new data, and updates the remainder of the lines on the display with this new data. During this process, a new frame may become ready from the GPU, and as we're not using Vsync, the frame is sent to the display immediately. This is because a display cannot update the entire image instantaneously, instead it updates line by line, usually from the top of the display to the bottom. Using the first method, Vsync off, causes tearing. It can pass the new frame to the display as soon as it is completely rendered, commonly known as running the game with "Vsync" or vertical sync off, or it can wait until the display is ready to refresh before sending the new frame, known as "Vsync on". ![]() With this varying render rate, there is a choice of how each rendered frame is passed to the monitor. That's the varying nature of rendering a game on a GPU. Sometimes it might take 20ms, sometimes it might take 15ms, sometimes it might take 8ms. When running a game, there is no guarantee that the GPU is able to render every frame in exactly 16.7 milliseconds. In other words, the monitor is updating its display every 1/60 th of a second, or every 16.7ms. Let's assume we have a monitor with a fixed refresh rate of 60 Hz. It's just as relevant and current today as it was then, so we've bumped it as part of our #ThrowbackThursday initiative. Now let's talk about why.Įditor's Note: This feature was originally published on August 2, 2018. That's the answer to the question for those that don't want to wait until the end. To answer this question we have to talk a bit about how a GPU and display work together to send frames into your eyeballs, and how technologies like Vsync function.īut the bottom line is, running games at extremely high frame rates, well above your monitor's refresh rate, will lead to a more responsive game experience with lower perceived input latency. Today we're addressing one of the most frequently asked questions we see about PC gaming: how many frames per second do you need? Should you be running at the same frame rate as your monitors maximum refresh rate, say 60 FPS on a 60 Hz monitor, or is there a benefit to running games at a much higher frame rate than your monitor can display, like say, 500 FPS? If not, my next step is to install the previous version of Studio One and see if it continues. Now, I'm sure it's probably just the button failing (ugggh), but I'm just seeing if anyone else has had this issue since my experience with this started on 4.5. It is EXTREMELY frustrating and I know it is such a stupid little thing for me to be bothered with, but I've become so accustomed to my workflow utilizing the FaderPort that this has become tremendously annoying. The light under mix turns on and turns off immediately as well. Meaning, I'll tap the Mix button, it flashes to the mix screen for a split second and then instantly reverts to whatever previous window I was in. The day that I downloaded 4.5, the mix button began to double click. As a result, my workflow is such that I expand the mix window to it's own separate window and flip between them with the transport. While I've been using S1 since V2, my history is with Pro Tools. Red sparkling wine is made using the same methods used to make clear and rosé sparkling wines, however in contrast with these regions, which often have to adhere to methods prescribed by law, red sparkling wine production methods are often the decision of the winemaker.
